Cloud security dangers are expanding more quickly than ever. As threat actors discover fresh and inventive ways to spread malware using cutting-edge technologies,
More than half (55%) of all HTTP and HTTPS malware downloads originated via cloud apps, according to Netskope’s most recent Cloud & Threat Report: Global Cloud and Web Malware Trends study, up from 35% for the same time a year earlier. That amounts to an increase of over 50% year over year.
Malicious applications are proliferating
According to Netskope, the growth is the result of more users downloading malware from well-known business cloud apps. OneDrive from Microsoft Office 365 parent company is thought to be the most well-liked business app “by a wide margin”. Furthermore, Netskope discovered 261 different malicious apps in the first quarter of this year. This is because the number of web applications with malware downloads also kept growing.
To make matters worse, just a small percentage of all web virus downloads are provided through so-called “risky web categories,”. Moreover, the rest of the downloads are dispersed among many websites. With a 7.7% market share, content delivery networks (CDNs) are the most popular.
In Q1 2023, five out of every 1,000 workplace users attempted to download malware. Additionally, the new varieties account for nearly three-quarters around 72% of such attempts. Furthermore, threat actors use data gaps and SEO poisoning for searches with scant results. Therefore, almost 10% of all downloads began with a search engine query. The researchers note that “this is just one of many social engineering techniques that attackers are accelerating.”
Also email, collaboration applications like Google Workspace, and chat apps are used to deceive users into installing malware. This makes social engineering the primary method of malware distribution. With 60% of all downloads being Trojans, this virus category is the most common. Including these 13% of downloads were for phishing involving email security issues.
